Biometric Login
Additional login protection on Fidelity’s iOS mobile app.
The Back Story
Prior to June of 2018, secure biometric login existed only on the Fidelity iOS app and was invoked using the native biometric capability. With more and more Android customers asking for Biometric Login on Android, Fidelity licensed DAON’s biometric API to be applied to both IOS and Android versions of the Fidelity app. The primary goal of this project was to bring parity between the two mobile platforms and to enable the use of biometrics for other authentication methods in the near future . Since this new capability handled the biometric information a little differently, we were required to create a new sign up flow for new app downloads or for first time biometric enrollments.

My Role
I worked on the information architecture, user experience and visual design of the various screens and touch-points in the biometric enrollment flow. I also did the final fit and finish sign off before the feature was rolled out to customers.
the Solution
After understanding the various pieces of DAON’s biometric capability, I started to sketch a couple of variations of the main enrollment screen. I then translated my lo-fi paper prototypes to hi-fi screens in Sketch. After validating the flow with the product owner, I went on to create a spec document and mapped all positive and negative use cases as applicable to the enrollment flow.

In Closing…
Early 2018, 80% of Fidelity’s iOS app users were actively using the native biometric login feature. The DAON implementation was rolled out 4 months ago and we have since seen more users adopting biometric login. Current enrollment numbers indicate 90% of Fidelity’s iOS app users are now using the new DAON driven biometric experience.
